First Trust Launches S&P 500 ETF With 20% Quarterly Downside Barrier

First Trust has launched the First Trust Vest S&P 500 Barrier ETF (SQBR), an options-based ETF designed to provide exposure to the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) with defined quarterly outcomes. Sub-advised by Vest Financial, the fund uses FLEX Options to protect against losses of up to 20% over approximately three-month periods, while capping potential gains. For the initial period running from October 19, 2026, to January 15, 2027, the upside cap is 3.37% and the downside barrier is 20% before fees, equivalent to 3.16% and 19.79% after fees. Unlike buffered ETFs, SQBR provides no protection if SPY declines by more than 20% at the end of the period. A 25% decline would result in a 25% loss before fees. The ETF charges an annual management fee of 0.85%, with its upside cap resetting every quarter while the 20% barrier remains unchanged.
